Babywearing Anne of Green Gables Style

I received this in the mail today. A friend of mine was ordering seeds from a catalog, saw them and thought of me. The best part was she thought enough of me to buy them!! What a sweet heart. Thank you Sara. I love that I have friends in my life that not only know me SO well, but would go out of their way to be so thoughtful.

I decided today I was going to plant them all over the property. After I finished, the kids and I planted sweet corn and 4 pine trees in two long rows at the back of the house.

The CRAZY part is that Audrey didn't want to watch us from the stroller so I strapped her to my back in the Mei Tai sling. She was so comfortable and happy that she fell asleep.

So here I was planting sweet corn in the fields, in a skirt, with a baby strapped to my back while my children followed behind me covering up the seeds.

I felt like a pioneer woman. I don't know how they did it back then. In fact, I don't know how the women in Africa do it, or the women in the cane fields of the Dominican do it either. It was backbreaking labor. It was VERY satisfying to have spent the morning planting in the fields to provide food for my family. It was great that my babies were right along side me. But wow oh wow am I ever glad I have a husband to do most of the backbreaking stuff around here. I am also grateful for modern equipment and farmers markets.

I am thankful for the pioneers that came before us, and I have a better appreciation for the African women that currently labor in the fields with their babies.

I am in awe of the generations of McNish women that had acres of gardens on this farm. I am in awe of the labor and the love and the life that was lived on this very land and I am so glad I have the opportunity to be a part of it. A VERY small part.
