Tappin' Trees

We decided to have a little fun and tap the trees on our property. We figure we could manage 12 buckets with all the maple trees just on our front lawn alone, but today we will try for two.

First you drill a hole into the bark. You only have to go an inch or so.

Then you 'Tap' the spout thingy into the tree on a slight angle and watch the sap drip out.
Then, you hang the bucket from the hook and add a lid.

There you have it. Difficult I know. We don't have the equipment to boil the sap ourselves, but the local sugar bush will trade sap for syrup. Sounds good to us. Someday we would love to tap all our trees and sell at the local farmers market. That would be a hoot. You never know.

How cool is that! I hope you get some good sap to trade. You will have to let us know how it goes.
