First you drill a hole into the bark. You only have to go an inch or so.
Then you 'Tap' the spout thingy into the tree on a slight angle and watch the sap drip out.
Then, you hang the bucket from the hook and add a lid.
There you have it. Difficult I know. We don't have the equipment to boil the sap ourselves, but the local sugar bush will trade sap for syrup. Sounds good to us. Someday we would love to tap all our trees and sell at the local farmers market. That would be a hoot. You never know.
