I have to admit that as the torch came close to us I felt a little teary. Like I was witnessing something quite special. I also have to admit my disappointment when I saw one of the torch bearers. As someone who has always been involved in sport and works really hard to stay in decent shape, I was upset that the lady carrying the torch was FAR from an athlete.
I equate the Olympic Games to an athletes ultimate achievement. Yes the Games are about bringing the world together, but are the games not SUPPOSED to be all about athletic achievement?
If you want to hold a contest to allow the 'regular' population to carry the torch should they not be able to at least jog a little??
I know the reasons why she was carrying it, but I can't help but feel let down. I feel that allowing just anyone to carry the torch makes a mockery of the games....I'm going to stop there.
Agree with me or not that is how I feel.
It was great none the less to witness the flame and a good way to introduce the girls to the Olympics and cool to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity...at least once in every 20 years or so.

Yay for Lara & Erin. Sorry you were disappointed by the torch bearer. After reading your post I was interested in finding out the requirements for being a torchbearer. The 2010 official site reads: "You don’t have to be a former athlete or have done something that is recognized around the world in order to become an Olympic Torchbearer. And, while we want to celebrate achievements, we also recognize that Olympic moments are unique, diverse and personal. Through the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay program, Canadians from many walks of life have had the opportunity and honour of being a torchbearer."
