Milestones and Over Emotional Mothers

I just dropped my oldest daughter off FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER....for an ENTIRE DAY...with strangers.

I'm O.K.

Well...Not really.

You see it is March Break around these parts and I signed Lara up for Dance Camp. I know she will have a good time and I thought it would be a great opportunity for her to do something different.

BUT....

It occurred to me RIGHT BEFORE I dropped her off, that I have NEVER LEFT HER IN THE HANDS OF STRANGERS FOR AN ENTIRE DAY.

I have left her for a Half a day, or an entire day with Family or friends. She has even been in programs where I have been in the building or been close by. She goes to Sunday school, dance class and playdates, but that is different.

Never has she been 'by herself in the world' from 8am-4pm.

Again...I'm a little emotional.

I'm sure this is what it feels like for moms when they drop their kids off at day care or school for the first time. To give your child over into the hands of strangers.

More than trusting the adults taking care of her, I am flooded with emotions FOR her. The feelings of nervousness, trepidation, fear, anxiety that all come with meeting new people and trying something new.

Will she make friends? Will the other girls be nice to her?
Girls can be mean...so mean.

Oh I hope she has a good time.

Amazing how as a parent we re-live life through our children. It brings me right back to all the emotions I felt as a kid in school and camp.

I'm overwhelmed....dramatic and over emotional yes....and overwhelmed.

O.K I feel better now. Thanks for listening.

Oh...i totally understand your emotions! Sending Madelyn to Kindergarten the first day...and the second...and still to this day...was soo hard. I was sooo worried! But she made a ton of friends...is little miss social butterfly and truly enjoys it! (plus, her teacher is a christian...they pray before snacktime...how awesome is THAT?)
I am sure Lara will have a FANTASTIC time and have soo much to tell you about when she gets home!!! I can't wait to hear all about it! :)
Have a great day!

I felt a little that way the first day Peanut went to nursery school last year, but it was almost worse at a birthday party she went to last spring. She only knew the birthday girl and both she and I didn't really know what to do when we got to the school gym where the party was being held. She wasn't familiar with the school (now, of course, she goes there for kindergarten) or the available equipment and I was a little shocked and even slightly wounded when all of a sudden, after about 10 minutes, she turned to me and said, "Okay, you can go now, mom."

WHAT??!! You don't need me anymore?! It was tough, but she really impressed me. Here I thought she was kinda shy and yet two hours later when I picked her up, she was having a blast with three new little friends -- one of which is now her best friend at school.

I think your little dancer will be just fine. And so will you!

Aw you big baby. She probably is glad to get away on her own.
Wait till she is a teenager then you will be glad she's out of your hair.

Luv ya
Dad

Every step of helping them find their way to independence takes a little out of us moms I think.

She's probably got all the little kiddies running around after her ...our "tough kids" are born leaders.
How'd she do yesterday? Was she keen on going back today?

Ok, I have really enjoyed checking out your blog! I stopped in for the tail end of your party, and stayed a bit! I may very well be back!
