There is a story in the bible that refers to two sisters Mary and Martha. The basis is that Jesus comes to visit and Mary sits and listens and just spends time with him while Martha runs around like a mad woman trying to be the best host.
(Funny because I am reminded of Martha Stewart)....anyway...
We had some friends over for lunch yesterday and I was reminded of that story. When we were first married I was trying so hard to become a great host. I would run around serve and clean. I was so preocupied with keeping the house picked up and having the presentation perfect that I found visiting more stressful than enjoyable.
Yesterday I could not have cared less about the state of my house. We just sat and had a good visit and I left the lunch dishes until after. I realized how far I have come when it comes to being comfortable just being myself. I've realized the importance of establishing good friends instead of serving the perfect meal.
It is also wonderful to have met such people that I can feel so comfortable around.
A good friend is so hard to find these days. Someone who accepts you for being you and just wants your company. I am grateful to have found friendships of that nature here is Kingston and will be sad to leave them behind when we leave. I will take with me the lesson of just relaxing and visiting and not worrying about what is not important in life. That I will carry with me forever.
Always growing,
Alyson
