Adam was out yesterday cutting wood with his Dad. They took Lara along. They went into the back fields and Adam got to hear stories of when Grandpa was little. Lara listened and asked questions, and stayed out of the way when told to.
She got to see trees cut down by beavers, and explore a frozen pond once played on by children of a distant past.
She was thrilled to have been trusted enough to tag along, and the quality time spent with both parent figures was priceless.
My husband also got to know his Dad that much more, and enjoy him for the person he is.
THAT is why we moved here...to the country and back in time. To learn about where we came from and to live simply and beautifuly.
It is nice when those moments come...especially in the winter when the power keeps going out and the drafts freeze my toes. I get to stop wondering 'what were we thinking?' and smile at the simplicity of it all.

This blog meant a lot to me - I feel strengthening of links from past through present to future - thank you Alyson and Adam and Lara. I bet John found the day heart-warming as well. (I think I skated and played hockey on that pond) Love you all. . .
AMEN!! Ditto for us -- although we moved away from both sets of grandparents, so that's definitely a down side. But the slower, simpler lifestyle is definitely what we were after.

Sounds like a great time for Lara. I long for a simpler, slower lifestyle. Enjoy your wonderful family in the wonderful countryside.
