Found the eggs

As I've mentioned before, my chickens have not been using the nesting boxes I've provided for them. Instead they perch(sleep) on the edges of them.
I've been finding eggs on the top of the straw bales but for the last three days I have had no eggs!!

Today I found one white one, but as I searched a lot harder I found SEVEN!!

NO, not on top of the straw bale.

Apparently they have made a nest in front of the tiny trap door that leads outside. I closed it for the winter and packed some straw in front of it. It is on the ground but is a little straw 'cave'.

Chickens like dark places to lay eggs and since I have a light on for heat all the time I guess they found this spot nice and cozy.

The problem?

It is not quite warm enough as it is still close to the outside wall and I guess if I don't catch the eggs quick enough they will freeze....

hence these ones. Frozen.

oops.

Today we are going to get an extra heat lamp. Next year we are definitely going to have to have more chickens so their body heat keeps the coop warmer.

Chickens are so weird. You're making me want to have some, though. I don't know if I'd want them over winter though -- the old barn on our yard that has the chicken coop built into one end is at the far, southwest corner of the yard. Where the most snow tends to get blown and build up. Not to mention it's a whole football field away from the house. Okay, I'll admit it: I just hate going outside in the winter. Period.

That is why your Grandpa sold all his chickens in the fall and bought more in the spring.

You can buy eggs a lot cheaper then what it's going to cost you in hydro to keep them warm.
