Chicken Dilema

These are my latest Chicken pics.

I have a problem.

I am getting three different coloured eggs from what I thought was the same type of hen. BUT!!! According to my research that is not possible. Apparantly certain hens lay certain colour eggs.
So how on earth do I have brown, white and one greenish white? Are they crossed with diffent breeds? ie different dads??

Hmmmmm....

I was also told the black and white one was the rooster....is it a hen of a different breed?

Anyone out there that can help me? Anyone? Bueler?

oh gosh...i have no idea! i am sorry! I wish i could help! I hope someone knows how to help you figure it out!

by the way...not sure if you are having any issues with them not laying much or not...but we did the light trick with our girls...and it works! We are getting 14 eggs a day again! :)

My husband was just talking about this the other day, and although the details are a little fuzzy I got the general idea.
Apparently to get good layers the breeds are mixed a little back in the line, and just like when different races mix, the colouring of the offspring (or egg in this case) can be darker or lighter depending on how the genes got passed down.
Not sure how accurate that is, but it kind of makes sense to me :)

Probably even though they are the same breed they still have variation. And you're right in that certain egg color is based on the breed. We have a rainbow of white and browns in any given collection (we have more than one breed too) and I love it! I never even thought about who lays what--although we do know the white ones lay white, so I would guess your black & white one is the white layer.

And that is definitely not a rooster.

We got a rooster by accident & we could tell before he really looked all that different by all the crowing. Now that he's grown, it's obvious he's a rooster.

Hope that helps a teensy bit --it really wasn't saying much :-) But know I do care about the fact that you care, even if I don't have the answer ;-)
