Sacrifices for Heat

This is the view from my computer window. Winter has finally arrived here in the country

This is my baby. He is storing up fat for the winter. Just look at that chin!!
He is also bundled up in four layers because we can't afford to turn the heat on in this monstrosity of a farm house.

This is the medium efficiency 2 year old oil heated furnace in our basement. Looks nice but it might at well burn money at the amount we would have to spend this winter.

This is the oil tank in our basement. I HATE the idea of relying on oil for anything in our home. Not environmental and so expensive...is that a mouse on top of the tank? (shivers)

This is a view of our new OUTDOOR Wood burning furnace from our deck. It smells nice. Don't tell anyone but it will be my chicken crematorium tomorrow. Seriously. What else am I going to do with that chicken?
Anyway I digress.
Wood is FREE!!!! and renewable. So much better on our budget and the environment.

This is a pic. of the wood I will have to carry to the furnace twice a day in the freezing cold. Yes I said ME....and yes I said FREEZING cold. If it means we are not freezing inside then I will have to suck it up.
Oh...Notice the tire RUTS that I created with the van? That was from me trying desperately to sneak our van into the garage. The Problem with that? Only half the van fits and the soil was VERY soft from the TRENCH that was dug for the furnace.
Now the ruts are FROZEN and it makes for a bumpy ride....oops

This is another pic of how far I have to walk from the shelter of the garage with the wood to toss huge logs into an open fire.
Feel sorry for me yet?
Actually the picture of me in my pink bathrobe with hat, boots, mitts, balaclava, scarf, snow pants, and any other warm thing I can wrap around my body is seriously a sight for sore eyes.

GOD BLESS COUNTRY LIVING.

OH!!! How we want an outdoor woodburner...but they are soo much money! AACK! I am soooo happy for you that you have one! I know it will be such a pain to continually load it with wood..but totally great for your checkbook and the environment!! :)

Oooo, I'm so jealous you guys have a boiler! We've been talking about it for a couple of years, but just can't afford it. We've got only an electric furnace and wow, that's not cheap either! The first year we were here, we paid about $400/mo for November through April!!!

We put a woodstove in the basement a few years ago as a cheaper alternative, but I'd feel so much safer if the fire was OUTSIDE!! It does do a fine job of heating our little house, though. We often end up opening a window or two in the evening for a bit. I hope our wood guy gets off his butt soon and delivers our cords -- we've been using our furnace full-time for over a month already.

Okay, help a city girl out here. How does the heat get from way out in the field into your house?! (I can hear people snickering - Val, is that you? - but I seriously can't wrap my brain around it).
