Picky Eaters

My chickens are picky eaters!

what is with my chickens!!
First off...they hate each other.
Second...they roost in the WEIRDEST PLACES! (oh, I have not mentioned that yet. I'll blog about THAT tomorrow!)

Third...they are SO PICKY!! This is weird because apparantly chickens are like pigs in that they will eat just about anything.

MINE ON THE OTHER HAND...DON'T!!

They LOVE grapes and apples. That they will eat everytime. I was throwing them an apple a day for fun for them to peck at, but my husband told me I was increasing the chance of fighting. Now, I cut the apple up and throw it around on the ground. This way my poor chicken with the bad foot and bare back has a fighting chance. Literally.

Anyway, they eat an organic feed called Organic Layer Mash. It has all the necessary stuff in it for the hens to be healthy. I also throw some small rocks on the ground for them to peck at and store in their gizzard thingys...yes I said thingy.
Chickens don't have teeth so they use the stones to grind the food.

Of course my princess' only like the big chunky stuff in the feed and always leave the smaller stuff. The meat hens I had earlier by the way would have licked the feeder clean if they had tongues. Do they have tongues??
I digress...
They end up leaving so much of the little bits that it clogs the feeder up. So when I go check on them and shake the feeder they run to it like they are simply famished!! I really don't think they are suffering.

I think they are training ME to give them more of the chunky corn stuff!!

Maybe they are smarter than I thought. Maybe they are planning their escape as I write this...maybe I'm dilirious from being up since 5am....silly time change.

Ahhh, you're SPOILING them!!! Only gourmet foods for them, eh? Man, who knew chickens could actually have personalities!!!

I'm touched that you thought of me while you walked the other day! How very sweet of you! I haven't walked for months, it feels like, but I've decided that I'm just going to drag Punkin along with me today while her sister's in school. Enough excuses!

ahahahahaha!! You just crack me up! I love how you describe things! If it makes you feel any better....when our chickens are free ranging for a few hours in the evening, if i go out...they follow me. LOL cuz they know i bring them food a lot. For a while, i felt loved..now i realize they just think i am food lady! LOL We give ours all our scraps etc from supper that aren't enough for leftovers etc. (except for the potatoes...my mom said that isn't good for them). Do you do that too?
