Goodbye my Tasty Friends

I've had three eggs so far. The first two were brownish/white and tiny. They tasted just fine boiled. ( I have to admit it took me a little bit to be able to eat it)

The third egg arrived today, one day before they are scheduled to go into my freezer.

This third egg is bigger, browner, and has little spots. I'm sure it will be just as tasty. The pic above is the egg.

For those of you who are unaware...I decided to take 4 of my in-laws meat laying hens and see if I could get eggs out of them.
I have....3 eggs in two weeks. Hmmm
That is o.k exept they EAT LIKE HORSES because they are 9 pound chickens. Good for my freezer...not so good for my egg budget.

So....I gave them until my In-laws were sending all their meat chickens away to give me eggs. That would be Oct 18th.

Sorry gals but 3 is just not enough. Especially since in the winter chickens tend to lay less eggs to preserve body heat, and they sometimes stop laying eggs altogether in the spring when they molt their feathers. I just can't justify keeping them around all winter for fun.
Besides...they would have to go at some point no? If not I would be running a geriatrics farm for lame hens :)

So there you have it, the end of my organic egg farm... FOR NOW.

In the spring I am going to start again with egg laying hens and some chicks, and you can all be a part of the journey with me.

Just so you know...I almost cried when they ran up to say hi to me tonight looking for food, so in the morning my father in law will graciously take them away for me quietly while I cry in a corner.

Goodbye my friends. I will miss you clucking and scratching the dirt. I'll see you on my dinner plate. I bet you will be tasty. Hmmm I wonder if I'll actually be able to eat you.

Stay tuned to find out ;)

I'm sad. I've been living vicariously through your chicken adventure. Hopefully you'll get some egg chickens soon.

Have a good week away from the blog. It is freeing.
